It's a crime that I haven't seen this until now. Holy mother of god. Let me list all of the things in this movie that are awesome: fedoras, trillby hats, fake Englishmen, really fat ties, the word "grifter," Irishmen who niether drink nor smoke nor chase dames, the word "dame," Robert Redford & Paul Newman doing stuff together again, giant cars which appear to have 80-cylinder engines, people with the last name "Hooker," and dumb private investigators.
This is an amazing movie. It felt tired to my eyes, but that is because every other heist movie (Ocean's Eleven, I'm looking at you) in the history of time has borrowed techniques from this film. It invented a lot of the storytelling devices seen in modern films, and for that reason alone it is a must-see. I was foolish enough not to have seen this for many years--son't make the same mistake I did. My Rating: 9.5/10 |
